If Noah was saved through the ark, is there a modern day ark that saves us?
Though the whole world was destroyed, Noah and his family were saved because of the ark. The Iglesia Ni Cristo teaches that the modern day version of this ark is the church, and that if you become a member of their organization, then you will be saved from the coming judgment. Is this what the Bible teaches?
When we look at scripture, we see that the Bible tells us exactly what the modern day equivalent of the ark is: Christ. It is not his body, the church, but Christ himself. Let's walk through 1 Peter 3:18-22 and see.
Christ suffered to bring us to God.
1 Peter 3:18 (ESV) - For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,
Here we have a very clear gospel proclamation. Christ suffered for sins. He was righteous, and he suffered for the unrighteous so that we, the unrighteous, could be brought near to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, meaning that though his body was killed, through divine power he rose again and conquered death.
Only those who had the ark were saved.
1 Peter 3:19-20 (ESV) - in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, 20 because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.
Peter now tells us that those who were on the ark with Noah were saved, but those who were not on the ark with Noah were not saved. In the very next verse, Peter tells us what the modern day equivalent of the ark is.
The ark is our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 3:21 (ESV) - Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
Peter tells us exactly what corresponds to Noah's ark! It is Christ!
If we are baptised into him - in other words, if we repent and ask him for forgiveness to cleanse our conscience - we can be saved! This wonderful thing is possible through the resurrection of Christ. In order to be saved, we must trust in work of Christ. He forgave the sins of those who believe through his death and resurrection.
Conclusion
1 Peter 3:22 (ESV) - who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.
Jesus is a great and wonderful savior. We are commanded to be part of a local body of believers, but that body is not the savior; only Jesus Christ saves.
Peter tells us that the modern day equivalent of the ark is Jesus. We can have salvation through faith in his resurrection to forgive us of sins.
The Iglesia Ni Cristo ignores the plain teachings of Peter when they say that the modern day ark is the church. We should be diligent to read our Bibles and understand what the scriptures teach about these very important issues.
